I was going through my comments again tonight and completing links in my summary posts when I came across the surname Mulvany. Turns out Harriet Alice Daniels (eldest sister of Arthur Daniels and how Gladys connects into my line) married a George W. Mulvany Jr. and is located 10 pages down from Nancy L Alderson living with her sister Matilda Mulvaney in the 1880 Marion County census. There is another Mulvaney family living a few doors up from them. I imagine they are all related.

It's pretty crazy how all the lines interconnect.

Tangent from the Daniels Line

This evening I was going through some of the comments that Gladys has added to my blog with specific information about individuals and putting the information into the summary post and ended up on a major tangent that resulted in me finding more information on a completely different line. [Happy Dance!]

I started looking at Edith L Daniels, sister to my great grandfather Arthur Daniels. Gladys had posted some information about her spouse and children. As a side note she included the information that Edith's husband was a widower with four children. In the process of looking up the informaiton on Edith and her husband Henry I also looked in the marriage index for Henry's first wife. Her name was Nancy L Alderson. Ding ding... Red Flag! Alderson is one of my family lines also in Marion county, Illinois. Arthur actually married an Alderson. Now my curiousity was peaked. There aren't many Alderson's in Marion County, Illinois and most are somehow related. The 1880 census finds Nancy Alderson living with her sister Matilda Mulvaney (another surname that rings a bell but I haven't pulled out of my memory were exactly it comes up yet) in Omega Twp, Marion County. The 1870 census is Nancy L. Alderson living with her mother also name Nancy and brothers Samuel M, William W, and Elijah E. DING there it is! William W. Alderson is the father of Ellen Otilla who married Arthur Daniels.

I continued down the line of census' and looked at the 1860 for the Alderson family and find James C Alderson and his wife Nancy in Marion County with 5 children (I'll post the census images here eventually!) but there was still no mention of a Matilda Alderson (I looked up the marriage record for Matilda Mulvaney and her maiden name was indeed Alderson and she was married in 1857). I went another census earlier and looked at the 1850, this time in Tennessee because many of the children listed their parents or themselves as born in TN (though the mother Nancy also had SC and Miss listed as birthplaces). I easily found them in Maury County, Tennessee and there was Matilda the eldest daughter. Interestingly there is only a 15 year age difference between the mother Nancy (23) and Matilda (8). Nancy's age is fairly consistent throughout the census records. James C Alderson is 32 years old in 1850. Makes me wonder if Nancy could be a second wife?? Something to look into.

Anyway thanks to the census and the fact that Nancy was living with her sister in the 1880 census I was able to pull the entire family together through FOUR census years. Another line of research totally seperate from the Daniel/Daniels line though suprisingly more connected than I thought.

Below is a letter of administration declaring that Levi Daniel died intestate (without a will) and gives George Daniels, his son-in-law, as the administrator of the estate. The document says that Levi Daniel died on or about the 23rd day of December, 1858 in Clay county Illinois. The document is dated January 3, 1859.

Meanwhile I was looking through some of the notes I brought home from my grandmas and came across one titled "Clay Co Register of Deaths"

Gladys emailed me after a day of me being frantically excited about what she was posting but unable to contact her and ask her questions. I am really excited to be collaborating with her. She is related through George Daniels' eldest daughter Harriet Alice Daniels, which means we share the same Great Great Grandparents. Small World!! She has already kindly sent me a copy of the postcard from Arthur Daniels to John Daniels that she mentioned in a few of her comments.

I have not yet been able to verify the relationship between Arthur Daniels and John Daniels. Gladys believes that John Daniels is Arthur's uncle and brother to George Daniels. If this is so it would be a breakthrough for George Daniels. I'm excited to see if we can prove the connection.

Others Researching Levi Daniel Line

This week I have had contact with two people who are working (or have worked in the past) on Levi Daniel and his family. Gladys has left a couple of comments on posts about Levi and I have emailed and just this week talked to Debi who's grandfather (still living) is a direct male decendant of Levi and has had his DNA tested.

I don't know a lot about Levi Daniel except that which I have posted on this blog. I would be greatly interested in colaborating with any and all! Lately my research has been jumping all over the place but I would like to really focus on Levi, his family, Louisa (Louvica)'s family and possibly pushing the line back or concretely connecting it to another line.

Lora B Daniels Barksdale: Obituary

I was going through the images I took while at my grandma's and came across the obituary for Lora B. Daniels Barksdale (taking the wind out of my previous post). The clipping was in my grandma's childhood bible and the information verifies what I found on the SSDI.

Mrs. Forrest (Lora B. Daniels) Barksdale, 79, of Iuka, sister of Robert Daniels of Decatur, died Thursday afternoon (April 29, 1980) in Salem Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. today in Rogers-Atkins Funeral Home, Salem. Burial is in Iuka Cemetery. Memorials: American Cancer Society.

John Richards Obituary (of sorts)

In addition to the family group sheets that came home with me I brough a stack of notes written on various scraps of paper. One of these notes included information about John Richards, brother of Mary Elizabeth Richards.

In my grandma's handwritting:

"News clipping in Grandma [Mary Elizabeth] Bigelow's Bible
Salem Feb 8 (no year)
John Richards died in Chicago of Pneumonia
Brought to sister Mrs Minne Bigelow's home
accompanied by his wife - service conducted
by Rev Shefer of Methodist church.
Mrs. Richards was former Miss Lillie Allmon"

It is unfortunate that the clipping did not include the year. It does give some other good information though including his wife's maiden name and where he was living when he died.

I would also love to know what became of Grandma Bigelow's Bible.

I went to the Statewide Illinois Death Certificates 1916-1950 and did a search for John Richards in Cook County. I came up with one hit that would be feasible with a Feb 8th obituary:

RICHARDS, JOHN Male/White age: UNK Cert #: 6005298 Death Date: 1928-02-04 County: COOK City: CHICAGO Date Filed: 28-02-05

I can't prove the connection without seeing the death certificate though and it is possible that he died after 1950 and wouldn't be in the database.

Lora Blanch Daniels: More Info Found!

I came home from my Grandma's house with a good sized stack of old family group sheets. I've been looking through them over the past few days and have come across tidbits of helpful information.

Tonight I was able to take some of those tidbits and solidify some information from my grandpa's sister, Lora Blanch. The family group sheet gave me the name of her husband, Forrest Barksdale (which sounds familiar so I probably already had the info written down somewhere -- the curse of disorganization). I did a search in the Social Security Death Index on http://www.familysearch.org/ and came up with a definitive hit for both Lora and Forrest! This information will make it possible to get their work done.

I was also able to locate Lora and Forrest in the 1930 Census taken April 16th in Stevenson Twp, Marion County which gives their ages as Lora 29 and Forrest 31 and their ages at marriage as Lora 24 and Forrest 27. They have a 1 9/12 year old daughter listed with them. The family group sheet has a penciled in marriage date of 28 Jan 1926 and the census info does not conflict with this date.

I went ahead and quickly did census searches for Forrest Barksdale. He is fairly easy to find with his unique name and limiting the location to Marion county Illinois. He is listed with his parents Louis and Effie in the 1920 and 1910 censuses. In the 1900 I find his parents, three older siblings, and a "Carson" born Aug 1898. I think it is fair to assume they are one and the same, either a middle name or a change of name.

Finding Buried Treasure!

You may have noticed my absence throughout the month of July. July was full of traveling between Utah, Minnesota, and Colorado but now I am back, the laundry is caught up, and life is returning to normal.

I returned from my trip to Minnesota to visit my grandma with even more to blog about than before. I went out there with a goal to take note of and steps to preserve the family heirlooms, photos, and documents in my grandma's hands. It turned out to be a bit more work than I thought it would be. It was all literally buried. I went through just about every nook and cranny of her basement apartment, 27 years worth of stuff, looking for family photos and turning up all sorts of interesting things (along with a lot of garbage like bank statements from the 80's). In the end it was very rewarding. I was able to pull together a lot of her original photos some from the mid 1800's, as well as funeral cards, obituaries, my grandpa's honorable discharge, marriage certificates and notices, birth records, and much more. A GOLD MINE! I then set to work to scan it all and then put it in a binder so it will all be in one place (Grandma wasn't ready to let it out of her hands, yet). My goal is to share the stuff I found here in the months to come. It's going to take me awhile, I came away with about 600 images between scans and photos (I was able to use my new table top tripod) I took of heirlooms that my aunt and grandma have. I also came away with a stack of old (legal size) family group sheets to go through.

In addition to family history items I also found a stash of personal history items for myself. My grandma had a lot of my family photos that my mother doesn't even have copies of as well as original art work from when I was 2 years old on up.

If any of you have older relatives I would strongly encourage going through their stuff with them and I learned ALL their stuff, pictures and documents were stuffed everywhere! I came across a few items that only have meaning when you know their history and that history will be lost unless someone takes the steps to record and preserve it.

I've got my work cut out for me. Lots of pictures, documents, and information to come!

1830 Illinois Census: Levi Daniel in Clay County

The 1830 census is similar to the 1840 in that it gives the name of head of household and tally marks for the rest of the members of the household in age groupings separated by gender.

Levi Daniel is listed in the census among other names of interest including the surnames Scaife and Bishop which, according to the unverified information I posted about yesterday, include siblings of Louisa (Louvica).

Possible Leads - Unverfied Information

I remembered that there were other people working on Louisa and Levi Daniel and I was curious what information they had so I did a few google searches on Levi Daniel. I came up with some interesting leads but practically no sources and citations. He is some if the information I came across as well as the links to where I found it. Much of it is from old message boards. I plan to try and contact the person that posted the information but I fear the email addresses will be outdated.

You will notice that most if not all of the information refers to Louisa as Louvica. I personally believe it is a transcription error but I have not been able to prove either way.

This paragraph of information came from the site Decendents of Robert Scaife I of Winton. It amazingly goes back into the 1500's BUT it is a line Louisa's sister married into so no direct ancestors for me. It does include information about Louisa and her siblings, who they married as well as dates. Interestingly enough the surname Scaife shows up with Levi Daniel's in the 1830 census.

Mapping out Land Patents of Levi Daniel 1834 and 1840
The below picture is of four sections. Each section is divided into quarters and each quarter is again divided into quarters. Each quarter of a quarter is 40 acres and was the standard allotment of land.

Levi bought the West half of the North West quarter in 1834 and the North East quarter of the North West quarter in 1840. Mapping them out shows that the lots were adjacent to each other.

The 1840 Census only includes the name of the Head of Household and then tally marks for the family members in age groups separated by gender. With the help of information from Land Patents and the 1850 Census, I am fairly certain that this is the correct Levi Daniel though once again the census gives the name differently as "Daniels".

I came across the issue of having more tally marks than known family members. I have tried to link some of the tally marks to the names I have and estimated ages. I am left with a female between the ages of 50 and 60, possibly a mother of either Louisa or Levi, and four children. It is a stretch for Louisa (b 1807) to be a mother to a 15-20 year old, let alone two making me believe that there are children in the household that are not hers. It is also possible that there are children of Louisa's that I do not know about.

1850 Illinois Census: Daniel Family

Not to be confused with George Daniels. This is the census of his wife Editha Adaline Daniel with her parents in Clay County, Illinois. The last name is actually given as "Danels" on this census. I've seen it spelled a multitude of ways, enough to make it confusing especially when Editha married a Daniels.

At the end of the household list there is a 21 year old female named Polina Danels and a child, probably hers, age 7/12 that shares the same name as the only son of Levi living in the house. Polina has the same last name making me wonder if she is the wife of an older son of Levi and Louisa.

The 1850 New York Census got me thinking to check immigration records for a George Daniels around the year 1850 on Ancestry.com. The search came up with four results. One came to California, two of them were from Puerto Rico, and one of them was from Liverpool England to New York City. BINGO!

Again have yet to prove without a doubt this George is my ancestor but the lack of any other possibilities gives this a high probability.

There are a few things that make this record valuable as far as genealogical research. First of all it puts George Daniels in Clay County at a specific time. Secondly, looking closely at where the land acutally is and then looking at the neighbors you find that his neighbor is Levi Daniel, father to George's wife. There is also a neighbor by the name of Whitely, the unverified maiden name of Levi's wife, Louisa. An interesting example of geoproximity and familial relationships in small areas. More research in the actual land records might prove to turn up more details.

A question though, where did George probably in his early 20's get the money to buy the land?

Elusive George Daniels

George Daniels has been eluding me for years. He is the "end of the line as far as it goes" for the Daniels line. I only have suggestive birthdates and the general birthplace of "England". I am not even sure when he emigrated. I have come across a few things that are interesting.

I have George in the 1880 (very excited to finally find that one), 1870, and 1860 census's with his wife and various children. The 1860 lists him as 26 with a 1 year old daughter suggesting to me that he was married just a few years before that. The next earliest record I have for him is a Land Patent for land in Clay County, Illinois dated 2 Dec 1850 suggesting to me that he would not be found in the census (taken in Aug) in Clay county. I found one possible match in the 1850 census for a George Daniels age 18 born in England living in New York city with a baker and a William Daniels also age 18 born in England. He is the only George Daniels born in England that comes up +/- 5 years from 1828. I will try and look into him further. I then began to wonder why a young single man would choose middle of nowhere Clay county to buy land and settle. I did another census search in Clay county in 1850 for anyone born in England, maybe someone George knew from the home country that he followed out. There was one name that came up that was interesting but just created more questions. There is a John Danels age 10 born in England living with a couple both born in N.C. Why would a 10 year old from England be living with a husband and wife from N.C. with no apparent name connection? I have no clue.

1880 Census for Arthur T. Daniels FOUND!

I was just writing a post expressing my frustration in not being able to locate the 1880 census for Arthur Thomas Daniels as a child in his father's house. I couldn't locate his parents or any of his many siblings and had tried multiple search engines a multitude of different ways. As I was writing the post I decided to do a final blanket search in the town I was pretty sure they were living in, Oskaloosa, and not put a surname and put a birthplace as England. AHA!!! and there they were. The census taker had flipped the names and gave everyone the surname of George (Arthur's father's name) instead of Daniels. Woot Woot! I'm happy to have found finally found them.

The census was taken a month before my unverified death date for Arthur's father, George Daniels. Unfortunately the mortality schedule for the 1880 census ended May 31st so he was not included.

There is a daughter, Ida M, missing that was born in 1870 and included in that census. Strong possibility that she is deceased though not certain for sure. Unfortunately the pre-1916 Illinois Statewide Death Index does not include Clay county yet. Something to search for in Salt Lake.

Exciting Family History Purchases

This week I have made a few purchases that are family history related that I am very excited about. Two of them are a direct result of my attending the Family History Expo last week.

I splurged and bought Legacy Family Tree 7.0 from one of the vendors at the expo. It is a pedigree software that I had heard great things about. The reviews were great online and I attended their "product plug" class at the expo and was very impressed. I was using an old version of FTM but was unhappy with the search capabilities within the program and the research reports and I had also heard that people were not satisfied with the upgrade version. One of the big selling points for Legacy was their SourceWriter which takes a lot of the guess work out of citing sources (which is very important to me). There also has the ability to copy things to multiple individuals and events as well as the ability to map out where those events took place. I've been slowly copying over my information along with my sources and so far I really like it. There is a free download version available on their website. It does not have all the features of the deluxe version (which I would recommend) but would give you a feel for the program.

The second thing I bought as a result of the Expo is a Foldable Photo Camera Tabletop Stand (I got mine from overstock.com, you can also find it on amazon). I attended a class by Barry Ewell who demonstrated digital photography techniques for genealogists. He recommended the tabletop stand and demonstrated it in class. The stand is really a glorified tripod that allows you to direct your camera straight down, as well as any other angle, to take pictures of documents, books, and vintage photos on a flat surface. A tripod is necessary because you need a longer exposure time without a flash in order to get a good digital image. Barry Ewell says he even uses the tripod to take digital pictures of microfilm ON THE READER, saving him time walking down to the copy machine and messing with the film and copy card. He also said it makes it very easy to copy pages out of books and a lot faster and more convenient than using a scanner (though a scanner, when possible, is the ideal way to get the best quality image). I'm excited to get my package in the mail! I'll be sure to let you know how it works for me.

The third, and most thrilling (and expensive) purchase I made this week were airline tickets to Minnesota to visit my Grandma! I have felt like I needed to go and have been talking about going for years. But no more talking, the tickets are bought and I am leaving in less than a month. I am excited to see my Grandma, talk to her, hear all her stories (over and over), take stock of her pictures and documents, photograph heirlooms, eat Lil' Debbie cakes, and simply hug her. To be sure I will be toting along my digital camera, laptop, and table stand with me on the airplane (but I will be kid free, what will I do on a plane for 2 hours without kids?!?) in anticipation of doing some family history with the oldest living relative I have. I'm excited!

Grandma's Memory: Does not believe he ever married. At least not while his mother was still alive. He had a serious injury when he was young (possibly fell off a horse) that affected his brain. It significantly affected his life.

The story of the injury is supported by his WWI Draft card where he repeatedly writes that he has had a general breakdown in health. It might also explain why he is still found living with his parents at the age of 36 and still single.

William's birthplace- it is given as Joplin, Missouri on his draft registration which I found shortly after I had concluded that he must have been born in Illinois. Missouri has a birth record index online and William Condon did not come up with any hits. I do know that the family moved some time between the time Charles and Margaret were married in Jasper, Missouri in 1892 and 1900 when they are in Fayette, Illinois. William was born in that time period but I'm still not convinced where. One census gives his birthplace as Illinois another as Missouri. I guess for now I will go with Missouri as his birthplace until I can prove otherwise.

I searched the SSDI on www.famlysearch.org for a William Condon born in 1894 and came up with four hits. None of them had a SS# originating from Missouri and only one of them has a February birthdate. I have yet to prove if it is the right William. I don't know why he would be in Minnesota but it's a possible lead so I am including it here so I don't loose it.

Last week I came across mention of the Family History Library's summer program for youth and families. I looked and looked for more information on Familysearch but was unable to find anything. Then while at the Expo one of the speakers mentioned the program and gave reference to it being on Familysearch Wiki. I looked it up today and I'm excited to share it.

The program includes a series of family history related challenges and activites that will help you learn more about yourself and your ancestors.

There is also a link to a website for children: Family Tree Kids which has many games and activites for kids focused on family history.

I am very excited to do this with my little boys. I'm all for starting 'em young.

Expo: My Highlights

I came home yesterday after another wonderful day at the Family History Expo and CRASHED. My brain was just all a buzz with the amount of new things I had learned and experienced, I was a bit overloaded. I've had a chance to actually digest a bit and wanted to share some highlights from the expo.

First off, I was very impressed by Holly Hansen (President of FHExpos) and her staff. As a Blogger of Honor they went out of their way to make sure that I was having a good experience. It was so unexpected. Thank you!

The Expo was held at the recently built Embassy Suites in Loveland, Colorado. The facility is stunning and was a perfect venue for the expo. There was ample room for those who attended and the classes offered.

The Exhibition hall was a buzz of activity between classes. I enjoyed mingling with the vendors and learning about their products. It was nice to put a face with a product and I enjoyed being able to ask questions. I even bought a few things that I am excited to implement in my research.

Everyone was given a cd with pdf files of the syllabus for each class. It took a while to load and figure out but I found it very handy to pull up the syllabus on my laptop during the class and then follow along with the speaker taking notes on things that were not included in the syllabus (no frantic copying of the slide before it changed to the next one). Even though I had a copy of the syllabus ahead of time, it was still difficult for me to decide on what class to attend. The class selection and topics were varied and interesting even to multiple skill levels.

Thank you to my wonderful husband who stayed home and watched my 4 and 2 year old boys so I could attended the entire expo. I have found that conferences and expos are an excellent way to re-energize my interest in family history and open doors in my research. I came away from the expo excited to utilize what learned in my personal research.

What did I learn (highlights):

Tax collectors are notorious gossipers. You never know what information they included in their yearly tax report and their records cover nearly 100 years before federal census records are available.
The 1911 British Census is available even though it wasn't supposed to come out for another two years and it includes the original handwriting of those taken in the census.
Techniques for taking digital photos of documents and photographs instead of making photo copies of them. I was surprised at the quality and ease. You can even photograph microfilm images.
The amount of German genealogical records available online is astounding! None of it was available like that 6 years ago. I'll have to learn a few words in German and then dive into the wealth of information online.
Familysearch has created a Wiki which is replacing their research helps and allows them to do immediate updates and gives quicker access to materials. It also allows anyone to add information, edit existing information, create links, add local news and events, and submit pictures of a place. It's something I'm going to have to play around with a bit and get involved in.
My husband has Swedish ancestors in his family so I attended a class on internet sources for Swedish genealogy. I was again amazed by the amount of information available for foreign countries. Family History really is a worldwide project. Family History Centers have access to Genline (a pay site that has images of Swedish records). My husband and I will be checking it out.
I ended up attending the Twitter class I mentioned a few days ago. I found it to be very helpful, which wasn't hard because I am very new to the technology and lingo. I have been Tweeting about the expo though I feel sorely unfamiliar with the workings of Twitter and the lingo and etiquette. The class helped me feel more comfortable and opened up my eyes to the possible advantages of twitter to family history. Essentially the network of genealogists has a lot room to grow on Twitter, there's a lot of potential. Go join Twitter!
The DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) website makes records easy to access even if you are not a member. They have a wide array of information available for a minimal fee and I plan to utilize their records. I have Patriots in my heritage and I am anxious to see what the DAR has on them and I might even go through the process to become a member myself.

I look forward to next years Family History Expo. I think it will be even bigger than this year with more attendees and vendors. I can't wait and I'll see you there!

Expo: Day 1 -Exhausted and Happy

I made it home, amid a massive rain storm, after a long, jam packed day at the Family History Expo. I am exhausted -mentally and physically. (I didn't sleep well last night. I think it was the "family history bed bug." Anyone else get that? Dreaming about names and records...)

Anyway, I went to the Expo very excited but not really knowing what to expect. I came away very impressed with how well organized it was. The facility is amazing, the expo staff and volunteers helpful, the class selection extensive, and the speakers very knowledgeable.

The overall theme for this years conference was "Learn the Tech to Trace Your Roots" and they really delivered with the keynote speaker as well as every class that I was able to attend.

Bernie Gracy gave the keynote address this morning entitled "Breaking Down Brick Walls with Location-Based Genealogy." He said that focusing on the TECH of genealogy involved two areas: 1) TECHnique 2) TECHnology. His keynote address covered the technique and his other classes covered the technology part.

According to Bernie Gracy, when approaching genealogy there are five dimensions (techniques): Biological (Who), Temporal (When), Socio-Economical (What), Historical (Why), and Geographical (Where). Many of us start with the Who and When and end up coming accross the Where along the way but in the address (as well as on his syllabus) Gracy said:

"I have come to understand the dominant influence of Where on the four other dimensions. When you take into account available technology and the relative lack of mobility before the introduction of the steam train and the automobile, or where physical geography hindered mobility, or where geography and culture intersect, the Where dimension becomes THE dominant dimension in your family tree."

He thus introduced the idea of "Location Based Echos" which affect the other four dimensions of genealogical research. I knew that Location was important in my research but had not totally realized the HUGE impact it had on families and communites. Gracy's case studies opened my eyes to the possibilities.

Goodness, it is now past 10:30 and I have to get up bright and early tomorrow for another full day at the Expo. More to come tomorrow!

More Twitter Info

Well, I've been searching around on Twitter today looking for family history related "Tweets". I will be honest and say that there are quite a few out there and some of them are rather interesting. I even found a link to a post about "10 Ways to Use Twitter for Genealogy". I found the information very interesting. Here are the ways they gave:

1. Find other genealogists. Click Find People to search for folks with genealogy in their username. If you regularly read a blog, look on the blog for a link to Twitter. Once you find people you like following, see who they follow (listed on the right side of the person's Twitter profile).

2. Learn about research resources. Many bloggers (including yours truly) feed their posts to Twitter, so you click the "tweet" to see the whole post. You’ll also pick up tips in people’s tweets about the latest records they’ve found.

3. Get opinions on genealogy Web sites and products.

4. Ask questions. You can just throw it out to your followers, or direct your question to someone using @ and the user name, like this: @FamilyTreeMag.

5. Be heard by people who work at genealogy companies. Use Find People to search for the company name.

6. Get links to how-to advice. Tweets are 140 characters at most, but people often link to helpful articles they’ve found online.

7. Hear about industry news. It’s like having thousands of eyes and ears looking for even obscure and not-yet-announced stories. If you see RT in a tweet, that means someone is repeating the tweet of someone he or she follows—you can see how the news gets around.

8. See how funny genealogists can be. One to follow: @TheGenealogue

9. Find events. Genealogy societies, libraries, museums, and conferences often tweet upcoming events.

10. Get cheap stuff. Many companies use Twitter to publicize sales and giveaways (some are exclusive to Twitter followers). Online backup service @Mozy, for example, has regular Twitter giveaways.

TWITTER and Family History???

It seems that Twitter has been thrown in front of me a lot in the last few weeks. For the Family History Expo this weekend in Loveland, Colorado (which I am very excited to attend) I was encouraged to look into Twitter as a way to share my experiences while at the conference. TIME magazine this week had a cover article as well as a smaller one on Twitter and how it is changing the way people communicate. Then while looking through the schedule for the Expo I noticed that there is a class focused on Twitter:

"Twitter: A Promising Tool for Genealogy Microblogging by Dean Richardson (his blog)
(Beginner-Experienced) Perhaps you've thought of starting a "Geneablog"--an online journal in which you share your research discoveries and brick walls with the Web-connected world--but recoiled at the time commitment involved or at the sheer effort required to write polished, fun-to-read posts on a consistent basis. If so, why not try "Tweeting" instead? In this talk we'll discuss Twitter, the new online phenomenon that lets you publish brief, spontaneous thoughts (genealogy-related or not) to a receptive audience in 140 characters or less."

I think I understand what Twitter is BUT I still don't understand the value of it in general or even more specifically the value of it to Family History Research and collaboration. I guess I might just have to take the class.

This information tells me the oldest two boys, Frank and John, are no longer living with their parents; possibly married. It makes me wonder if they immigrated to the US with the rest of the family. I do not know who Richard Baird is but "Baird" is Sarah Richards maiden name.

Possible 1891 Canadian Census Record

I did a search for Edward T Richards (b 1876) and came up with a hit on Ancestry for the 1891 Canadian Census in Hamilton City, Ontario. Unfortunately to view it on Ancestry I would have to have a "World Deluxe Membership" which I don't have. Thus I'm making note and will try and look for it next time I'm in Salt Lake. If this turns out to be the correct Edward I likely will find the rest of the family.

Richards Family on new.familysearch.org

I was entering the information I found on the census records onto new.familysearch.org when I came across something interesting.

Mary Elizabeth Richards was the only child given for Edward and Sarah Richards. I did an inital search for her siblings and came up with two entries that had been extracted by the church: a John Richards born 16 Sept 1872 in Wexford, Ireland and a Francis John Edwards born 4 Sept 1870 in Wexford, Ireland both with their parents listed as Edward Richards and Sarah Baird (Beird).

I was looking for the John Richards and merged him into the family but the Francis John was unexpected. I wonder if he could be one of the deceased children I am missing. He would have been the 2nd child, he's in a location that fits the family (I have Wexford as the bithplace of Edward Sr), and the parent names match up even if there is a slight spelling variation on Baird.

This is all further complicated by the fact that when I added Frank to familysearch I used a calculated birth year from his age in the 1881 Census that now matches the birth year for the John Richards I merged into the family. Don't be fooled! They are different people!

Plus: Ideally I would like to get more information about the children of Edward and Sarah before we run off and do the temple work but I understand I don't have total control over this.

Further Research Needed: Find more information on Francis John Richards. Did he die before the 1881 Census?

I have found names of interest but I can not be sure that they are the right ones with out looking at the original record. Richards Family in 1881 Canadian Census

I was excited to find the entire Richards family together in the 1881 Canadian Census on the original Familysearch.org. I have not seen the original document but familysearch includes a transcription. Ideally, someday I will get my hands on the original.

Interesting information includes the religion given as Church of England and the inclusion of John Baird in the household. Sarah's maiden name is Baird and it leads me to believe that John is her brother. The family immigrated sometime between 1873 and 1876.

Richards Family in 1910 Census

The same people appear in the 1910 census as the 1900 census. They are 10 years older but there are a few numbers that conflict with those given in the 1900. The year given for immigration is 1891 in the 1900 census and given as 1902 in the 1910 census (which doesn't make sense because they are in the US census before that year). There is also a difference in the total number of children. The 1900 says 5 of 9 are living where the 1910 gives 5 of 6 are living. Either way there are some deceased children who I need to locate.

The family is living in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. Mary Elizabeth, the oldest daughter, was married five years earlier also in Chicago. There are only two children still living in the household, Edward and Charles. The census gives the birth month and year for all individuals. It also gives their immigration year as 1891 and that Edward T. Richards and his son Edward have both been Naturalized. There is also a Servant in the household.

Is the name Edward or Harold? 1910 &1920 Census

While doing the summary for Henry Dodd Bigelow and adding his list of children I came across a problem. A few weeks ago I found the birth certificate for an Edward Bigelow (b 1902)that was clearly the son of Henry and Margaret (Minnie) Bigelow. I joyfully assumed that I had found a child that I didn't yet have record for.

The other night I was looking more closely at the census records and saw that in the 1910 Census there is not an Edward listed but there was a Harold M age 8 which would put him also being born in 1902. The 1910 Census also lists the number of children vs the number of children living. These numbers were both 3. This leaves me to conclusion that Harold and Edward are likely the same person but what happened to warrent a name change and is there any way to prove it?

Also Harold is proving a bit elusive in the 1930 Census.

He's Been Bit!

I am excited (and a bit proud) to say that I have got Josh hooked on family history AND blogging. Our Stake has expressed the goal to have every member go on new.familysearch.org to prepare at least one name to do the temple work for this year. Josh accepted the challenge and has officially been bitten by the family history bug. He has even started his own blog Family History of Sarah K. and J. Eddy Martin to record his research.

It has been a lot of fun to work together on his research as well as side by side on my own. Josh even figured out how to better share the images of the documents using scribd.com so that they can be viewed up close on the blog as well as saved at higher resolution from the blog. We have been up late almost every night this week doing family history and it has been great fun to share two of my interests with my best friend.

If you go to the next image on Ancestry.com it turns out to be Shelby's older brother Russell Dillman born Sept 27, 1897 who registered on the same day.
